About The Project

GoCycling's goal is to reduce employees carbon footprint by promoting bike commuting. The program is designed to motivate and engage the users through gamification.

Context and Initial Problem Statement

Recently, I started commuting by bike in Barcelona and I was pleased to discover that the infrastructure for bikes is actually really good. However, it struck me that despite this, a lot of people still choose to commute by car, often alone. This observation reflects the broader challenge of sustainable urban mobility faced by EU cities.

To address this issue, the EU has recognized the urgency and implemented measures such as the Urban Mobility Package and significant funding. However, audits have shown that EU cities have yet to make a fundamental shift towards sustainable transportation, indicating a need for a change in mindset and behavior.
In this context, the daily commuting habits of employees who use conventional modes of transportation, such as cars and motorcycles, not only contribute to air pollution but also generate noise pollution.

My role

I choosed a problem and implemented design thinking to solve it. I conducted users researches and used the findings to create user flows, wireframes, and prototype.

app

Target Market

I focused on employees who work and live in cities and have a daily commute to their workplace. The ones that currently commute with the car or motocycle but also those who already have chosen to commute in a sustainable way and enjoy doing daily activities.

Design Process

Research Goal

  1. Discover how people usualy commutes, with the pros and the cons.
  2. Discover if sustainability is important in people's choice of commute mode.
  3. Discover what are the main factors that influence people's commuting choices?
  4. Discover if people are already using a sustainable transport option?
  5. Discover if their companies already offers options for sustainable commuting?
  6. Discover what would motivate people to participate in a sustainable travel program?

Takeway and Problem Statement

After collecting the survey and interviews feedbacks, I discovered that in general people enjoy using bicycle as a commuting mode when living and working in the same city due to it's flexibility and sustainability. Also, by commuting by bycicle, workers experience a notable positive impact on their productivity and overall well-being at work . However, factors such as the initial cost, especially for E-Bikes, unpredictable weather conditions, and safety concerns are perceived as disadvantages. Also companies often lack convenient solutions to encourage and support their employees in making this choice and this can decrease employees satisfaction.

User Persona

Alex Tad

Alex Tad is 36 years old and works as a HR manager in a big corporate with more than 500 employees. She lives 5km away from her worplace and currently commutes using her scooter. Alex believes in living a healthy and active lifestyle and enjoys outdoor activities. She contemplates switching to bicycle to commute because she seeks a way to reduce her carbon footprint. She has her sights set on an E-bike, acknowledging its numerous benefits, but is faced with apprehension due to the significant investment required for such a purchase.

HMW’s

Solution

"GoCycling" is an all-in-one subscription that gives the employees possibility to rent bikes and E-bikes through an app.

Besides that, the Android/iOS app will support the user with all the aspects related to urban commuting such as directions, speed, effort and distances.
To motivate the users, every employee will have a personal profile and the option to share their daily effort of commuting with the community. This will boost the morale of the employees, incentivise them to ride and reward them with virtual challenges and awards through gamifigation.
The subscription is offered by companies that want to be more eco-friendly as a bonus to their employees that can choose between different tiers (basic, pro, premium).
